Is a cold weather shelter needed in Jefferson City?

Jefferson City Room at the Inn was open from the beginning of December until mid-March this past winter. During the 106 nights of operation, there were 69 nights of below freezing temperatures and 10 of those nights had temperatures in the single digits. Only 11 of those nights had overnight lows above 40 degrees.

Jefferson City Room at the Inn had a nightly capacity of 20 individuals.  The nightly average was above 19 individuals per night and individuals had to be turned away on many evenings.

Does Jefferson City Room at the Inn attract homeless from outside of our area?

The great majority of guests are familiar to our volunteers from past years of operation and seeing them in the community throughout the year.  This past season we had 103 different individuals filling the 20 beds available each night at Jefferson City Room at the Inn.  While there is no hard data available, it is unlikely that a person would travel any great distance to Jefferson City on the chance that he or she might be one of 20 people staying in the shelter on any given night.

Are the people staying at Jefferson City Room at the Inn dangerous?

Jefferson City Room at the Inn is a low barrier shelter meaning those staying overnight might suffer from addictions, have criminal records, or experience mental health issues. There have been infrequent occasions where authorities have been called for assistance.  But the over 200 volunteers working evening and overnight shifts at Jefferson City Room at the Inn this past winter have not been seriously threatened or injured in any way.  Interestingly, a majority of our volunteers are women and many of them are retired.  They find it rewarding enough that the 11 shifts for volunteers each night are readily filled with many volunteering for shifts several times each month.
